Life is definitely very colorful indeed. The festival of holi definitely proves life is colorful indeed. It is the point of time when every one wishes to celebrate life with a free spirit. However, there are certain pointers children must adhere to while playing this festival of colors.

• Children must check whether colors are original/natural and soft to the skin before using them.

 

• While applying colors to others, children must make sure they take care of the other person’s senses. Children must be made aware that these colors are nothing but chemicals such as mercury sulphite (red), copper sulphate (green), etc.

 

• During holi, if children do not take care while letting their friends, family and others apply colors, they can experience serious losses such as impaired hearing, skin irritation or even eye damage.

 

• Water balloons should be avoided if possible as they can harm the person hit with a water balloon extensively.

There is a story behind this festival of holi. Do let your children know this story so that they can be opened to the various Indian traditions and festivals. This way they can feel warmth of the Indian culture and remain aware of the historic backgrounds that they come from.

Here’s the story…

Once upon a time there was a demon king by the name of Hiranyakashipu. He was very proud of himself along with being very arrogant. He thought of himself as the most powerful being in the entire universe. Thus, he ordered everyone to worship him instead of lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu had a son whose name was Prahlad who was a deep devotee of Lord Vishnu. This made Hiranyakashipu angry and further ordered his sister Holika, who was blessed with a secret power of staying immune to fire, to help Hiranyakashipu get rid of his son Prahlad. Thinking that she will not get burnt by fire, Holika took Prahlad in her laps and sat in a bonfire. However, the reverse happened as her secret power of staying immune to fire had conditions to her blessing. She could not misuse her power of being immune to fire as it was a blessing from lord Brahma. She got burned in the bonfire whereas Prahlad survived due to utter faith and devotion in Lord Vishnu as he was repeatedly chanting lord Vishnu’s name while being in the bonfire. Thus, this festival is celebrated in the name of Holika as a symbol of victory over evil. Happy Holi! Happy Parenting!

Parents get excessively frustrated with their behavior and it seems really intolerable for parents to tolerate their behavior. Now, what should a parent do in such cases?

Firstly, dont scream back at the child if you think that the child will get more notorious by your screaming.

Think more as a friend than as a parent. Compliment them whenever possible. Try to correct their mistakes. Remember, children are very sensitive to what their parents say and express to them. This can have a positive as well as a negative effect on children depending upon how their sensitivity can be capitalized to get positive results.

Some children shout because they have loads of energy that is not used but keeps building as excess energy. Some children shout because they cannot get what they want. Some children cannot cope with being quiet, they just want to express and so they shout. Some children express their rebel by shouting.

What a parent can do best is to eat, sleep, play and talk with them as much as possible and become a friend more often than just a parent. Its nice to be a kid with a kid because then the kid finds a friend rather someone who is going to boss over them and scold them. Let them feel a special connection towards you as a parent. Then try to instill discipline in them, it will definitely work.

Many parents punish their children for not studying. That wont do any good. As a parent, you’re inducing hatred for studying within the child. Even though the child might start studying because you, as a parent punished the child for not studying, the child wont give his/her best and focus on what he/she has been forced upon unwillingly. This leads to a shocking state of mind that suppresses their communication and expression. Instead of getting the child on the right track and getting the child interested in studying, a parent has discouraged and depressed their child so much that now the child lives in a fearful state of mind. The parent is now encouraging negative thinking within the child through punishment. Children will start developing the habit of lying because their parent is forcing them to study instead of what they love doing the most: playing.

Playing is a child’s nature and a child must be given to play as much as possible because a childhood just comes once in a lifetime, not again.

Childhood is bliss.

Make children play while they study. Transform their study into fun and all play. Make their study like a story. To be honest, my mom did make stories from my textbooks that I could remember and understand easily.

They do all their homework by themselves. They are very different from most other kids at school and if you have such a kid, you’re really lucky.

But what if you had to tell your children..

If your find your child doing anything of the following:

1. Loses assignments, textbooks, pencils, etc often.
2. Does not do homework even after repeatedly telling the child to do the homework.
3. Day-dreams very often.
4. Has behavioral or social problems.
5. Prefers to avoid school very often.
6. Loves to play often.

Your child loves to practically apply what is being taught in school rather than just read it and keep it in his mind as some information. Your child loves to experience life as much as possible. This means that your child has the potential to become a very good personality and not otherwise. You must not fear that your child wont be able to match other children of the same age and might fail exams. You must just take a few steps to make sure your child does what you say:

1. Be a good story teller. Tell your child stories very often and teach their homework in a simpler way by making a story. Children love to hear stories and they remember stories very often. Especially if your child avoids to do homework, this can be an excellent way to make them study.
2. Slowly but steadily.. as they start getting interested in doing homework, make sure you make them study for not more or less than 1 hour.
3. Listen to your child more often than not. This way you keep the communication channels open.
4. Play with your child as often you can and eat with them whenever possible. Become a child with your child and then become their best friend.

Doing the above will be enough for you to appreciate your child to the next level, especially if you start encouraging him/her that he/she can come out as a winner in life in every way without pressurizing them.
