Different parents have different approaches towards punishment. A child is bound to make mistakes. You can not help it. But how should parents treat mistakes of children? Physical violence or oral bombardment or plain ignorance? How should they deal with this problem? First of all, parents need to focus on severity and nature of problem. Children make mistakes, sometimes innocuously and some other times to get attention. They know if they make mistakes their parents will definitely turn to them. Or parents are giving in to every demand of children and they can no longer take any refusal for any demand? Every situation has different complexion level. Children must be made to understand what their parents think and why. Children must given the time to come up with their ideas even against the ideas of their parents in a healthy way. Arguments, debates and discussions must happen between a parent and a child . the child must be given the choice to express their thinking, feelings and understanding. Parents must convince their children to do what they want rather than enforce their choices on their children which will definitely have disadvantages for the parent in the long run. When ever you try to answer their questions, they see the answer as a picture within their mind – it could be an object that they have seen or they will draw their own picture. 

This is your opportunity as a parent to make them realize that “knowledge is power”. Gain some great general knowledge in order to teach them good enough general knowledge and you will stand to gain a lot of importance within their lives. It so happens that our life is occupied by our parenting responsibilities so much that we even forget doing what we wish to within our lives. During stages when the child is an infant, toddler, adolescent or even a teenager; we have a huge amount of responsibility which we have to take care of. We cannot afford to get distracted by anything else when we are performing our regular responsibilities. So, as a parent, how do we create the time and space for ourselves to enjoy and experience the different colors of life?

In a way, we want a little bit of time and space to relax, to be free of all the worries in the world that we have?

How does a parent do just that?

Teach your children of being “independent” all by themselves. Whatsoever be the case, in my opinion, I feel a good parent is one who lets their adolescent child take up all their responsibilities slowly and steadily that may include even washing dishes & clothes, cleaning their room and desks by themselves, learning to cook food by themselves and even doing the same when needed for others. This does not mean that you as a parent do not take any responsibility in seeing whether your child is doing his/her bit for themselves. Having a maid at home will maybe enable you to be free for a good period of time but won’t enable you to make your child be independent when the maid is not around. You must make your child be all by themselves, self-sufficient in all capacities.

After all, life is an experience irrespective of whether good or bad, right or wrong, legal or illegal. If you can teach your child to be responsible enough for their own good, you will never have to suffer or spend more time on them.

There is another good point;  Children have to be taught to be honest, expressive and respectful. Once they behave honestly, openly and respectfully; you wont have much worries in your mind.

Parents get excessively frustrated with their behavior and it seems really intolerable for parents to tolerate their behavior. Now, what should a parent do in such cases?

Firstly, dont scream back at the child if you think that the child will get more notorious by your screaming.

Secondly, if they are demanding something, do think what will be effect if you give in to their demands. Sometimes you can give them some things but not always.

Thirdly, When they get too demanding and intolerable, don’t hit them. This will encourage them to rebel against you as a parent which will create further trouble.

The best thing as a parent you can do is to encourage them to experience silence at a deeper level. Try to take them away from home near a very natural place which is serene and silent. Make efforts to make them experience and hear the sounds that are within their minds and which disturb them quite often than not. Even a holy temple would be a great idea as temples generally make people experience a more silent life. Silence can do wonders to a child’s bad habit of incessant screaming. Make sure the silence touches their heart, mind and soul.

Think more as a friend than as a parent. Compliment them whenever possible. Try to correct their mistakes. Remember, children are very sensitive to what their parents say and express to them. This can have a positive as well as a negative effect on children depending upon how their sensitivity can be capitalized to get positive results.

Some children shout because they have loads of energy that is not used but keeps building as excess energy. Some children shout because they cannot get what they want. Some children cannot cope with being quiet, they just want to express and so they shout. Some children express their rebel by shouting.

What a parent can do best is to eat, sleep, play and talk with them as much as possible and become a friend more often than just a parent. Its nice to be a kid with a kid because then the kid finds a friend rather someone who is going to boss over them and scold them. Let them feel a special connection towards you as a parent. Then try to instill discipline in them, it will definitely work.
